The 3-Word Method That Makes Sharing Jesus Simple (Even If You’re Shy)

With Greg Stier, Founder of Dare to Share Ministries

Have you ever wanted to share your faith but felt… well… weird about it? Maybe you’ve had that pit-in-your-stomach moment where you knew the Holy Spirit was nudging you to say something—but your brain froze halfway between “hi” and “hallelujah.”

If that’s you, welcome to the club. 🙋‍♀️

In this episode of Java with Jen, I sat down with Greg Stier, founder of Dare to Share Ministries, who’s spent the last 30+ years equipping millions of students, parents, and youth leaders to confidently share the gospel.

Greg’s story reads like a movie script—complete with street fights, redemption, and a hillbilly preacher named Yankee. But it’s not just dramatic. It’s proof that God can use anyone—from the most unlikely families to the most introverted believers—to change lives for eternity.

☕ From Violence to Victory: Greg’s Radical Family Transformation

Before leading a global youth evangelism movement, Greg grew up in what he calls “a violent mess.” His uncles were competitive bodybuilders, bar bouncers, and boxers—the kind of guys the Denver mafia nicknamed “the Crazy Brothers.”

“My mom was the only girl, and all my uncles were afraid of her,” Greg laughs. “She was like the woman at the well… with a baseball bat.” Untitled document

Greg’s mom nearly aborted him but was stopped by his uncle, who had recently come to faith. A few years later, a preacher named Yankee knocked on the door of Greg’s toughest uncle—Jack—and dared to share the gospel. Jack said yes to Jesus (his sinner’s prayer was literally “Hell yeah!”) and led 250 people to church within a month.

One by one, the entire family came to Christ. By age 15, Greg had led his own mother to the Lord.

“That’s why I’m passionate about teenagers and the power of the gospel,” Greg says. “Because I saw it transform my whole family.” Untitled document

⚡ The Moment Dare to Share Was Born

Years later, after serving as a youth pastor, Greg realized something shocking: most youth ministries were all pizza and games, with no mission.

“I thought, this is lame! These kids need a mission, not just a retreat,” Greg recalls. Untitled document

That frustration—and the heartbreaking Columbine shooting in 1999—became the spark that launched Dare to Share Ministries, dedicated to mobilizing teenagers to share their faith.

Since then, Dare to Share has trained and equipped millions of teens and leaders in over 110 countries. But Greg says the secret isn’t complicated—it’s spiritual, relational, and measurable.

📊 The Game-Changing Research: 3× Growth, 10× More Gospel Conversations

Greg shared brand-new research from Dare to Share that proves something staggering:

“When youth ministries mobilize their students to share the gospel, they experience 3× more growth and 10× more gospel conversations than typical youth groups.” Untitled document

Let that sink in.

The average teen in a traditional youth group has five gospel conversations a year. In a gospel-advancing ministry? They have fifty—one every week.

That means more conversions, more discipleship, and stronger faith retention when those teens hit college.

“We keep sending kids off to college as lambs to the slaughter,” Greg warns. “But if they’ve been actively sharing their faith, you send them as missionaries to the mission field.” Untitled document

👊 Why Teens—and You—Are the Key to Revival

Greg believes the next revival won’t start in pulpits—it’ll start in cafeterias, campuses, and coffee shops.

“Eighty percent of people who come to Christ do it before they turn 18,” he says. “They can spread the gospel farther and faster—especially through social media.” Untitled document

That’s why Dare to Share hosts the Day of Global Youth Evangelism, where students from around the world go out to share their faith on the same day. Last year’s event included 110 countries, with the highest participation coming from Nigeria, Venezuela, and the U.S.

Greg points out that one teen posting a viral gospel video could reach more people than Billy Graham did in 15 sold-out stadiums. Untitled document

💬 The 3-Word Method: Ask. Admire. Admit.

So how do we make sharing Jesus less awkward?

Greg’s simple framework—used in every Dare to Share training—is what he calls the 3-Word Method:

  1. Ask – Start with genuine questions about their life or beliefs.

  2. Admire – Affirm what’s good in what they say.

  3. Admit – Share your own story and need for Jesus.

“Ask, Admire, Admit slows the talkers down and speeds the shy ones up,” Greg explains. “It turns presentations into conversations.” Untitled document

He also reminds us:

“Awkward is awesome. Because it’s in the crucible of awkward that change happens.” Untitled document

Even Jesus had awkward conversations—the woman at the well, Zacchaeus in the tree, Peter on the shore. The gospel always gets personal before it gets powerful.

👩‍👧 Parents, This One’s for You

Most of my Java with Jen listeners are parents, so let me say this: your influence is greater than any youth pastor’s.

Greg points to Deuteronomy 6 as the blueprint for family evangelism:

“Youth pastors are important, but parents are the real pastors,” he says. “My kids saw me share the gospel with baristas and waiters—it became our family lifestyle.” Untitled document

If you’ve been praying for your kids to be bold in their faith, this is your sign to start modeling it.
